BLS Provider Renewal
The BLS Renewal course is a fast-paced course that allows the experienced BLS provider (those who are confident in their BLS skills through regular use in their work in the ED, CCU, ICU on code team, or paramedics and first responders) the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge through written and skills assessment in a concentrated program. Successful completion of this two hour 15 minute course (approximate time) allows students to renew their BLS course completion card. Students need to come prepared. The BLS Renewal course is fast-paced, assumes you have retained the cognitive knowledge learned in the Heart and Stroke BLS Provider course and can demonstrate skills mastery. There will be limited practice and limited opportunities for remedial coaching. All participants are expected to be highly proficient BLS providers. This is not an entry-level course, those students who are unsuccessful in the skills or knowledge test will have to take a full BLS Provider course.
To qualify to take the BLS Renewal Course:
- Hold a current (not expired) BLS Provider certificate from the Heart & Stroke Foundation, issued under the 2015 Guidelines. CPR HCP certificates from other agencies (St. John's, Red Cross) are not accepted for the BLS Provider Renewal.
- Be able to complete one - and two-rescuer CPR skills evaluations for adult and infant CPR, including AED and bag-valve-mask - practice time in this condensed course is very limited. Students that cannot complete the CPR skills will need to take the full BLS course.
- Be able to complete the open-book written knowledge evaluation with a passing mark of 84%. Students that cannot pass the written knowledge evaluation will need to take the full BLS course.
Please note that there are no refunds if students are not successful in completing the BLS Provider Renewal course.
Please bring your 2015 BLS Provider manual to the course with you. It is strongly recommended that you review the material in the manual prior to attending your course.
